Use of Force by Police: Overview of National and Local Data

This report is one in a series of publications by the National Institute of211u001eJustice (NIJ) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) that seek to inform 211u001epublic discussion by examining police use of force from many perspectives. The 211u001ereport provides an overview of the state of research knowledge about police use 211u001eof force, updates progress on the national BJS Police-Public Contact Survey 211u001e(PPCS) and the database project of the International Association of Chiefs of 211u001ePolice, provides the latest findings from NIJ-supported use-of-force research 211u001eprojects in several local jurisdictions, and offers a researcher's suggestions 211u001efor a future research agenda on police use of force, with special attention given 211u001eto issues of excessive force.
