This report presents a first-ever study examining the energy consumption by211u001eauxiliary equipment in commercial building HVAC systems in the United States. 211u001eThis equipment is used to distribute heating and cooling within a building, move 211u001eair for ventilation, and reject to the environment the heat discharged by cooling 211u001esystems. Commercial building floorspace was segmented according to building type, 211u001esystem type, and region, based largely on the 1995 Commercial Building Energy 211u001eConsumption Survey. Cooling and heating load estimates developed by Lawrenace 211u001eBerkeley National Laboratory using DOE-2 analysis for a set of over 400 prototype 211u001ebuilding models was used as the basis for the study. Models of HVAC equipment 211u001edesign loads and operating characteristics were developed based on engineering 211u001ecalculations, product literature, discussions with equipment suppliers, and 211u001eactual building site-measured data collected by Xenergy as part of their XenCAP 211u001e(trademark) demand-side management program. Energy use estimates were developed 211u001efor more than 1,500 technology/market segments representing the different 211u001ebuilding types, regions, system types, and equipment considered in the study.
