This report discusses the federal judiciary's use of recalled magistrate judges211u001eand bankruptcy judges. Recalled judges are retired magistrate and bankruptcy 211u001ejudges who, with their consent, return to judicial duties for a specified period 211u001eof time. Specifically, as agreed with your office, our objectives were to 211u001edetermine (1) whether the demand for recalled magistrate and bankruptcy judges 211u001ehas exceeded the number of judges available to serve in recalled positions, (2) 211u001ewhether the courts that recalled judges had judgeship vacancies and/or higher 211u001ethan average weighted case filings, and (3) the approximate 1-year cost savings 211u001eassociated with using a recalled judge rather than filing a full-time judgeship 211u001eposition.
