A three-dimensional boundary element solution of the time-dependent211u001ediffusive/advective equation in non-homogeneous soils with both physical and 211u001echemical non-equilibrium processes is developed. Saturated conditions and rate-211u001elimited mass transfer are assumed. The Laplace transform remove the need for time-211u001estepping and the associated numerical complexity, and the use of Green's 211u001efunctions yields accurate solutions of infinite domains such as soils as well as 211u001emedia with finite dimensions. The solution requires boundary discretization only 211u001eand can therefore be a valuable tool in bio-remediation and landfill design where 211u001edifferent geometries, soil properties and pollutant loads may be analyzed at low 211u001ecost. The proposed technique is validated by comparing its predictions to 211u001eanalytical solutions obtained for different types of soil and contaminant 211u001esources. The scope of the method is illustrated by analyzing the contamination of 211u001emulti-layered soils by a neighboring river and a surface source.
