Occurrence of Pesticides in Streams and Ground Water in the Puget Sound Basin, Washington, and British Columbia, 1996-98.

This report discusses the occurrence of pesticide compounds in surface and ground water in the Puget Sound Basin. The findings are based on data collected in 1996-1998 by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program, and by a separate U.S. Geological Survey study in 1994 of pesticide occurrence in public water-supply wells. A widespread detection of pesticides compounds was observed in surface waters of the Puget Sound Basin. Fifty-five percent of the 47 pesticide compounds analyzed were detected in surface water, and 17 percent were detected in ground water. The herbicides atrazine, prometon, simazine, and tebuthiuron were among the most frequently detected in both surface and ground water. The number of pesticide compounds found in ground water influenced by agricultural, urban, and mixed land uses was far fewer than surface water influenced by the same land uses.
