摘要

One of the strategies for reversing this wetland loss in coastal Louisiana is to partially restore some of the natural flow into the ecosystem. Diversion of freshwater and sediments from the Mississippi River is expected to conserve and restore coastal wetlands. One such project is the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion Project. The construction for this project began in January 1997. Freshwater diversions to the Barataria Basin are scheduled for 2001. In order to establish a baseline prior to any freshwater diversions, the EMPACT (Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking) project team began monitoring the water quality in Lake Salvador and Lake Cataouche (both are downstream of the diversion) in August 1999. After freshwater diversion occur, the water quality monitoring will continue. Analyses of pre- and post-diversion water quality data will be used to determine the effects of river water diversion in the estuary.
