Preliminary Guide to the Identification of the Early Life History Stages of Giganturid Fishes of the Western Central North Atlantic

The Giganturidae (telescope fishes) is a small family, comprised of two species; Gigantura chuni, and G. indica (Brauer, 1901). Specimens of giganturids have been collected in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They are distinct in that they exhibit an unusually long larval stage, as well as a late and unique transformation. They have developmental characteristics that are considered to be neotenic.
