Characterization of Luminance Probe for Accurate Contrast Measurements in Medical Displays

Quantifying the luminance range and image quality of a diagnostic x-ray image presented in medical electronic displays for radiology workstations is difficult because of the extremely high contrasts involved. Methods are presented here that permit the evaluation of the performance of a detector probe used in an attempt to accurately measure these high contrast images. The contamination of the measured displayed luminance arising from the reflections back of the detector probe. The veiling-glare from scattering is seen to be the major contribution to errors in luminance measurements using a simple detector within the probe. Suggestions for improvements are presented for future work.
