摘要

This report examines Nevada door-vehicle collisions during 2000-2004. The research evaluates the effectiveness of animal warning systems and other countermeasures initiated to protect the motoring public and deer populations. The project also includes a literature review so promising, low cost countermeasures can be considered for field evaluation and countermeasures of higher cost can be recommended for integration into construction projects. A research technical panel, composed of employees of Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), directed the research study. The Nevada highways with a high propensity for deer-vehicle collisions were US 93 north of Wells, Nevada, and I-80 in the vicinity of Pequot Summit. The literature review revealed only one 'effective' countermeasure, which was the wildlife grade separation. Six countermeasures of 'promise' were also identified: (1) wildlife grade separations with exclusionary fencing and vegetation; (2) deer crossing warning signs activated during migration; (3) deer crossing warning signs activated by presence of deer; (4) at-grade crossings with exclusionary fencing and warning signs; (5) roadside reflectors, and (6) roadway lighting.
