Fresh Deciduous Fruit (Apples, Pears, and Grapes): World Markets and Trade, December 2009

Global apple exports have jumped 15 percent in just 3 years, with virtually all the growth attributed to China and the European Union (EU). They each gained 30 percent as demand has expanded for healthy snacks and off-season fruit. World production has grown as a result of favorable weather, improved management practices, and new plantings coming into bearing, especially in China. World pear exports are forecast to expand 4 percent due to expected higher demand, particularly by Canada and Russia. Slightly larger world production is predicted, resulting from favorable weather and improved management practices. World trade is projected to remain relatively unchanged for grapes.
