The planning of a traffic system and land use should be an interactive process. In practice it is more like two separate processes where information is merely fed from one plan to another. There is a similar lack of co-operation between traffic planning and safety evaluation programs. Improvement is also needed in the synergy between different methods for traffic safety evaluation. A working group meeting was organized to evaluate the current situation, including experts with various viewpoints on land use planning, traffic forecasting and safety evaluation programs. The aim of the workshop was to promote the benefits of co-operation and present the bases and principles of the programs to enhance development. Several problems were identified, such as lack of knowledge and suboptimal co-operation, and the needs for development and proposals for further action were written down.
