National Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy Implementation Update, 2010

In June 2009, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Attorney General Eric Holder, and Director of National Drug Control Policy Gil Kerlikowske released the 2009 National Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy. The strategy is a key component of our comprehensive national response to the threat along the border. This response also includes cooperation with Mexico through the Merida Initiative, the Administrations increases in border-related personnel and equipment, and our national effort to reduce the demand for illegal drugs in the United States. The strategy seeks a substantial reduction of the flow of illicit drugs, drug proceeds, and associated instruments of violence across the Southwest Border.
