INVESTIGATION OF INTEROPERATION OF AMERICAN AND GERMAN TELETIPEVRITERS

An investigation was initiated by this Laboratory at the request of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer to determine the feasibility of operating certain Gorman teletypewriter encampment is existing Army circuits and to determine the adjustment and operating procedure required to obtain maximum operating ranges when interoperating Genus and American teletypewriter equipment. Due to differences between the keyboard layouts of the Lorenz printer not those of standard American teletypewriters, it is felt that the transmission speed of experienced operators will be considerably reduced when first using the Lorenz machine. It is recommended, therefore that torn Lorenz printer be used as an expedient measure only, pending the installation of American equipment, preferably in installations having lot traffic volume and there low message transmission speeds may be tolerated.
