The Current Status of Penicillin Therapy

The purpose of this technical bulletin is to describe the indications, dosage, and methods of administration of penicillin. Methods and rates of administration are described, including intramuscular, constant intravenous drip, oral troches, intrabronchial instillation, and topical types of administration. Special reference is made to the use of penicillin in beeswax and peanut oil (P.O.B.). The dosage, effectiveness, technique of administration, and removal of the beeswax after injection of P.O.B. are described. Allergic reactions and stability are discussed. Treatment of the following infections with penicillin is discussed with required dosage and cautions in its use: gonococcal, meningococcal, pneumococcal, staphylococcal, streptococcal infections, impetigo, subacute bacterial endocardites, syphilis, Vincent's angina, sinusitis, trachitis, bronchitis and bronchiectasis, actinomycosis, urinary tract infections, tetanus, diphtheria, anthrax, leptospirosis (Weil's disease), yaws, ornithosis, and intra-abdominal infections. Prophylactic therapy for patients with rheumatic or congenital heart disease, and with nephritis is described. A bibliography of 50 references is included.
