Coronary Atherosclerosis--Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Implications

The pathogenesis of artherosclerosis is discussed in this technical bulletin in terms of the influencing factors of age, sex, hypertension, nutrition, and metabolic diseases. The metabolic theory of artherosclerosis is addressed, with illustrations from human and experimental disease, and correlated with lipid and lipoprotein patterns. Local factors are also addressed in relation to predisposition and susceptibility to the disease. Prophylaxis and therapy are discussed, with sections on reduction and low-fat diets, drugs reducing cholesterol absorption, thyroid and sex hormones, and the use of anti-coagulants such as heparin and heparin-like sulfonated polysaccharides. 56 references are included.
