ON THE EXCITATION OF SURFACE WAVES IN DIELECTRIC SLABS PART I. EXCITATION BY A MAGNETIC LINE (SLOT)

In this report the excitation of a surface wave in a dielectric slab by a magnetic line is considered and the effect of varying the thickness of the slab and the height of the source is analyzed.nThe surface wave fields is stronger inside the dielectric slab, but the efficiency also depends on radiation loss. The radiated power is a minimum if the source is placed where the induced charge minimised the radiation loss. It is, therefore, not ourprioing that the most efficient location of the source is outside the dielectric for very thin slabs and inside the dielectric for thicker slabs.
