Dityndallism, Conservative Dichroism and Bidissymetry, Promising Effects for the Determination of the Shape of Colloidal Particles and Molecules
The phenomena of anisotropic light scatterings expected upon orientation of non-spherical macroznolecules and particles are described, possible ephods for their investigation arc indicated and the precept status of their heretical treatment is outlined. The “dityndallism” observed laterally for incident laetriy polarized light, the “conservative dichrcism,” its complement in the transmitted light, and the dityndailism for incident unpolarized litht and alexia associated phenomenon of “bidissymstry” are recognized as very premising effects for determining quantitatively the dimensions of rigid non-spherical macromolecules and colloidal crystals and the hydrodynamic deformability of non-rigid dodics such as random coils subjected to hydrodynamic shear. Other applications of the phenomena, with which four types of birefringence may be associated, are also enumerated.
