Connective Cell Bands in the Central and Eastern United States as observed by Radar

Analysis of time-lapse radarscope films reveals that certain types of line storms have a distinctive and characteristic meso- and micro-structure. Features of such storms which are identified and studied are: (1) the “thin band”;(2) the “cell band”;and (3) the “trail band”. In detailed case studies it is found that the thin band is a radar echo apparently produced by a region of strong dielectric gra¬dients;the cell band is produced by hydrometeors in active convective cells;and the trail band is a precipitation area from an older storm or is generated in some manner by the juxtaposition of the line storm and a "bubble" high pressure area.
