摘要

A method for determining the response to random excitation of a simple oscillator with nonlinear damping is developed. As is always the case in random motion, the response is determined in terms of the root-mean-square response and the probability distribution. The probability distribution is found to be markedly different, in the nonlinear case, from the Rayleigh distribution found for the linear case. The effects on the probability of failure of an oscillator may therefore be quite profound even when the mean-square response of the nonlinear oscillator is the same as the response of a otherwise equivalent linear oscillator.
