Commercial Process Evaluation of the H-Coal Hydrogenation Process

A conceptual commercial plant design to convert coal to oil refinery products by the H-Coal hydrogenation process and an economic evaluation thereof are presented. Effects of various product distributions on the commercial economics are discussed. Included in the report are: (1) conclusions of a study made to determine potential commercial plant sites, a brief process description of the type plants envisioned, and economic analyses of these plants at one possible location, namely southern Illinois; (2) a comprehensive process design of a basic refinery capable of producing as its principle products approximately 20,000 BPSD (Barrels per Stream Day) gasoline and 10,000 BPSD domestic furnace oil with by-product sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate; (3) the results of a comprehensive survey of potential commercial plant sites based on coal reserves, coal costs, product distribution, and water availability.
