Urban Intersection Study. Volume Vi. The Driver in a Real Life Environment

The purpose of the observation studies was to gather and measure data on vehicle movement and interaction at selected intersections. From the tabulated results, driver behavior patterns, as related to their own vehicles and in response to other interacting vehicles, could be inferred and used as both input parameters for the urban intersection model, and as data with which to validate the output of the model. The studies were carried out over a period of two years at two different intersections by two different data collection procedures. In addition to the vehicle movement results obtained, each collection procedure evolved new techniques for obtaining data on vehicle movements without interfering with the driver or driving procedure. The report presents a detailed description of both techniques and the results obtained in the study at each intersection. In addition, the data obtained from each intersection is compared. (Author)
