Factors Affecting the Results of Polished-Stone Value Tests

One of the most important factors determining the skidding resistance of a bituminous road is the polishing resistance of the aggregate appearing in the road surface. The accelerated polishing test has been developed at the Road Research Laboratory to measure the polishing resistance of aggregates, and gives results which are expressed as polished-stone values (PSVs). Much research has been carried out to relate the PSV of the aggregate when used in various types of road surfacings to their skidding-resistance under different traffic conditions, and appropriate minimum PSV limits have been recommended by the Ministry of Transport so that the wet skidding resistance of roads can be kept at a reasonably high level.
