The study covers the development of a computerized system for analysis and design of multi-story rigid frame steel structures. The analysis is carried out by the stiffness matrix method while the beam and beam-column designs follow the American Institute of Steel Construction specification set forth in the 1963 manual. The system is developed for use with the IBM System 360/67 equipment at the Pennsylvania State University and utilizes random access disk storage devices. The computer input is in the form of a Problem Oriented Language, which is discussed fully in the text with a complete User's Guide found in Appendix A. The basic theory is discussed relative to analysis, beam design, and beam-column design, with references made to the AISC specification where applicable. This discussion is followed by an explanation of the computer programs which implement the theory. Comparative calculations are carried out to verify the accuracy of the system in analysis and design, and two frame problems are included as examples of the typical problem statement and solution.
