R/D NEEDS FOR AIR POLLUTION INSTRUMENTATION (Interim Analysis)

The information presented in this paper is directed to individuals concerned with the planning of research and development work in air pollu¬tion instrumentation. This is a general outline, based on the difference between overall needs and the current state-of-the-art as defined by avail¬able instruments and completed R&D programs. Definite needs exist where current or imminent standards require an instrument which does not exist, or where missing data are required to define new criteria, in addition to the improvement of existing instruments. The most commonly measured pollutants are all related to combustion, and these are more likely to require continuous measurement on a large scale than other pollutants which are largely spot hazards.
