Automatic Gaussian Random-Noise Limiter

The design and circuit analysis of a random noise limiter that has the unique capability of automatically establishing the maximum limiting level reference is thoroughly discussed. The circuit was designed in order to protect electronic test instrumentation from the harmful effects of high amplitude noise signal inputs. Positive and negative peaks of a random noise signal are limited with respect to the root mean square of the signal. The limiting action is achieved by an operational rectifier circuit which establishes the conduction point of reverse-biased diodes with respect to the instantaneous random signal level.
