Consumer Expenditure Survey: Diary Survey, July 1972-Jun 1974

The expenditure and income data collected in the diary survey are presented here in 129 tables which classify families and single consumers by important socioeconomic family characteristics. Expenditures are expressed as weekly weighted averages; income data are shown as annual averages. The primary purpose for undertaking the 1972-73 Consumer Expenditure Survey was to gather data necessary to revise the Consumer Price Index. Aside from this important mission, the survey provides the only comprehensive body of income and expenditure information available for satisfying the broad range of analytical activities that exist in this area. The data can be used in examination and analyses of consumer demand and income, in social welfare planning for poor and low-income families, in market research analyses of demand for different products or market areas, and in consumer counseling designed to assist families in evaluating their household budgets.
