Variation in Suckering Capacity Among and Within Lateral Roots of an Aspen Clone

Excised roots were used to determine variation in suckering capacity among and within lateral roots of an aspen, Populus tremuloides, clone. Differences among lateral roots were significant. Within segments of a lateral root sucker production showed a high degree of polarity, increasing from the distal to proximal ends. This indicated that aging was not a factor regulating suckering within lateral roots.
