Social Benefits and Assessment of Local Urban Open Space: Recommended Program of Environmental Design Research Priorities (Environmental Design Research, Problems and Needs)

The report attempts to identify, justify, and rank environmental research (EDR) problems in the field of local urban open space such as streets, sidewalks, neighborhood parks, play grounds, school yards, shared open space in residential development, institutional grounds, downtown open space, vacant lots, wastelands, and urban wilds. The investigation, oriented towards the interdisciplinary field of people-environment relations, includes contributions from researchers and practitioners across a wide range of disciplines and professions. Based on material gathered from questionnaires, field visits to local community development organizations, telephone and field interviews, and a literature survey, six main areas of research were identified. In top rank, were people-environment management, user satisfactions and values; in second rank, methodology and site types; and in bottom rank, macro-secondary effects. Within each main area, specific topics are identified forming the basis for discussion and recommendation of detailed research program priorities.
