The ability of disposable ECG monitoring electrodes to adhere to the human skin is an important performance parameter for which a standard test method is needed. In support of a standard for electrodes under preparation by AAMI, UBTL studied adhesive characteristics of commercially available disposable ECG electrodes. Analysis of the data shows the peel strength of electrodes varies by more than a factor of 10when measured on human skin,and more than a factor of 3when measured on various bench test surfaces. The peel strength of electrodes measured on stainless steel were consistently higher than those measured on human skin,however the multiplication factor which ranged between 1and 3depending on electrode type,was not consistent enough to allow significant correlation. Electrodes having thinner porous tape backing and different adhesive systems,when tested on stainless steel,showed initial correlation to human skin,but due to a nonlinear increase of adhesive force with time did not demonstrate suitable overall correlation. Testing on glass frit filter surfaces showed better peel strength correlations than stainless steel for all electrode types,but still demonstrated an unacceptable variability over the 48-hour test period.
