Better Cash Management Can Reduce the Cost of the National Direct Student Loan Program

The report summarizes the results of a review on the cash management of the National Direct Student Loan program. It shows that schools maintain large amounts of Federal funds beyond their current program needs--those funds should be returned to the Government. However, to avoid serious impairment of program operations, the Congress may have to provide the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare with the necessary flexibility to reuse returned funds.
