Alcohol, Drug, and Related Mental Health Problems: A Pilot Curriculum for Primary Care Providers.

The report presents a pilot curriculum for primary care providers concerned with identifying and appropriately treating alcohol, drug, and related mental health problems. The target population of primary health care providers is defined as physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. The curriculum covers recognition, motivation, interviewing, and case management. Several methods are used in presenting the curriculum, including lectures on the four major topics; case studies to which the significant learning points are applied and discussed in small groups; small group reports followed by group discussion; and faculty panels that review key points, clarify issues and experiences, and answer questions. The curriculum comprises six sessions: Workshop Orientation/Overview; The Recognition Problem; Patient Motivation; Patient Interviewing; Management Options; and Community Resource Panel and Workshop Wrap-up.
