Evaluation of Fall Forage Fish Surveys, Lake Michigan, 1962-79

The buildup of salmonid populations in Lake Michigan through annual stocking of hatchery-reared fish may become limited by the quantity of forage fish, primarily alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus), rainbow smelts (Osmerus mordax), and slimy sculpins (Cottus cognatus), available for food. This report examines the design and mechanics of this survey in the light of modern sampling theory to determine ways in which accuracy and precision of forage biomass estimates could be increased without substantial increases in cost.
