An Assessment of Shipboard Tank Level Indicating Systems

Tank gauging systems, typically used for liquid bulk carrier applications, are generically classified and representative gauging units of these classes are assessed through laboratory and design review evaluations. The evaluation procedure is based on a tank gauging standard that was devised to promote the development of safe and reliable equipment. This standard specifies qualification requirements for certifying equipment worthy for marine use and forms the bases for issuing type approval certificates. Domestic and foreign owners/operators, shipbuilders, classification societies, regulatory agencies, and manufacturers were consulted throughout this study program and a compendium of their attitudes, opinions, experience, and recommendations is included and summarized. The report concludes with major recommendations concerning the implementation and adoption of type approval and training programs and it further concludes that the U.S. Marine community should very actively participate with the international consortium of standards organizations.
