摘要

On Jan. 1, 1981, Greece became the 10th member of the European Community (EC). Greece and Italy combined export more canned peaches, fruit cocktail, and pears than the U.S., South Africa, or any other country. Since its inception, the EC has protected its canned deciduous fruit industry by applying high tariffs and variable sugar levies to restrict imports of canned deciduous fruits from the world's more efficient producers. Although tariffs on a number of canned fruits were reduced somewhat and the variable sugar levy fixed at 2% in the Tokyo Round of the Multilateral Trade Negotiations, the EC implemented a processing subsidy scheme in 1978/79. This scheme now applies to such deciduous fruits as peaches, William (Bartlett) pears, and sweet cherries. This report is based on a survey conducted in May 1980 by B. Benidt, representing the California Cling Peach Advisory Board.
