Rural Volunteer Emergency Medical Coordinators (EMCs), Executive Summary and Final Report

The research project demonstrated the use of volunteers as Emergency Medical Coordinators (EMCs) in thirty-six rural communities (under 2,000 population) in Georgia, in which an available ambulance was not nearer than five miles. The results indicated: (1) there was a perceived need for the EMC program; (2) the concept of EMC in the communities worked very well and was acceptable; (3) the program was effective in that the response time for the EMCs were 4.39 minutes on the average as compared to an ambulance response of approximately 20 minutes; and (4) the program was cost effective with respect to the cost of training.
