Computer Manufacturing in New England: Structure, Location, and Labor in a Growing Industry

The case study of the computer manufacturing industry in New England offers an overview of industry structure, plant location, employment, and public policy. Focusing particularly on the minicomputer industry in Massachusetts, the study discusses the importance of New England's manufacturing and research and development activity to the industry as a whole. Firm ownership, size, capital sources, and management are considered, as well as concentration, competition, and the level of prevailing research and development activity. The relationship of location to the national and international expansion of the industry are discussed. Employment levels, occupational structure, and the racial, sexual, and age composition of the labor force are considered, as are wage levels, capital/labor substitution, and training. The role of the Federal and State governments are critically reviewed.
