Archaeological Reconnaissance for Alternate 1 of the Proposed Philipps-Pettigout Terminal and Channel, East Dubuque, Illinois

This study represents a preliminary, phase I investigation summarizing data and recommendations from previous surveys as well as reporting the survey of the terminal area. Surveying pool 12 of the Mississippi for the Corps in 1981, a pedestrian investigation was conducted of cut banks and shore lines around Switzer Lake, the location of the proposed barge channel. They recorded 3 sites: 11-JD-121-122-123, which will be affected by the project. In 1982, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee also inspected the periphery of the lake. They tested the land portion of the channel. The survey relocated 2 of the 3 sites found in 1981. Since the November pedestrian survey found no artifacts in the corn field which it leases from the Corps, it was recommended that Mr. Philipps be permitted to pursue his negotiations with the Corps was conducted.
