The role of international agricultural research in helping developing countries meet the massive challenge of feeding their people is examined in this report. An initial section surveys the world food problem and describes key factors affecting food production - soil fertility, disease and insect control, yield potential of traditional crop varieties, traditional agronomic practices, availability of production inputs, governmental agricultural policies, and research/extension programs. The important role that international agricultural research centers can play in dealing with these issues and the centers' relationships with national food production programs are then examined.
