Pine Ford Lake Phase 1 Archeological Survey

An archeological reconnaisance survey of 3356 acres within the proposed 15,000 acre Pine Ford Lake in Jefferson, St. Francois, and Washington Counties in east-central Missouri produced a total of 75 sites; 54 prehistoric and 21 historic. While it is difficult to make interpretive statements from this initial Phase I survey, the data seem to indicate that sites of the Late Woodland period were located predominantly on river and stream terraces while sites of the earlier Late Archaic period are located on ridge slopes. This preference for site location must be evaluated during future work in this area.
