Antifungal Constituents of Rhamnus Prinoides

Results are presented of an experiment in which the fruits of Rhamnus prinoides were dried, defatted with hexane, and extracted with methanol. These polar extracts were hydrolyzed, acetylated and chromatographed by several techniques to yield at least four apparently homogeneous materials, designated Prinoidin A, B, C, and E. Through a bioassay of these materials, Prinoidins A, B, and C have been found to have Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (M.I.C.) against C. albicans in the same range as some commercially successfully materials. The prinoidins were also demonstrated to have activity against A. niger, although not as high as against C. albicans. It is concluded that the prinoidins have excellent potential as antifungal agents.
