Development of a Disk-Chain Implement for Seedbed Preparation on the Rangeland: A Prospectus

Revegetation of rangeland with improved grasses and forage plants can increase forage production two- to three-fold, but already high and rising revegetation costs are causing this practice to become limited in scope. A promising new technique, 'disk-chaining', appears to be an economical method of preparing seedbeds on rough, loglittered rangeland and results appear reliable under a broad range of conditions. The disk-chain is a large anchor chain with disk blades welded to alternate chain links. When attached to swivels and pulled on a diagonal between two crawler tractors, the disk-chain performs like a giant one-way plow and can traverse heavy brush and logs without difficulty.
