Occupational Alcoholism: A Review of Research Issues. Proceedings of a Workshop Held at Reston, Virginia on May 22-24, 1980

Papers are presented from a workshop held to provide participants (drawn from academia, research, government, and industry) an opportunity to review the current status of research in the field of occupational alcoholism and to offer recommendations for future research. The following eight major topics are reviewed: (1) epidemiology of alcohol abuse and alcoholism within occupations and organizations; (2) risk factors for alcoholism associated with occupations; (3) barriers to the development of occupational alcoholism programs; (4) design and integration of intervention mechanisms; (5) interorganizational relationships; (6) dynamics of the identification and referral process in work organizations; (7) psychodynamics of the return and followup process in work organizations; and (8) evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of occupational programs. A state-of-the-art review, a critique of that review, and recommendations for future research are presented for each topic.
