Review of Factors Affecting Microstructure and Toughness in Simulated Heat-Affected Zones of Structural Steels

Included in the survey are conventional carbon-manganese, microalloy and low alloy steels. Simulation techniques were used to produce microstructures related to the coarse-grained region of the HAZ, i.e., peak temperatures in the range from 1200C to 1450C. The effects of maximum temperature and cooling rate of the simulation cycle are described in detail including multipass and post weld heat treatment. The influence of steel composition and microalloying are examined. Moreover, a comparison of toughness in simulated specimens and specimens taken from weldments is made. Finally, advantages/disadvantages of the thermal simulation technique are briefly discussed.
