Performance Characteristics of a Fluidized Bed Operated as an Unfired Heat Exchanger and the Influence of Simulated Ship Motions

Research was undertaken on a 2x3 foot, unfired fluidized bed heat exchanger in the marine engineering laboratory at Webb Institute in order to characterize the unit and to evaluate the effects on the bed of simulated ship motions. Some consideration was given to the problem of extrapolating bed behavior up to full scale. The project was intended to establish the feasibility of shipboard use of fluidized beds to provide an experimental facility for their further development.
