An experimental program undertaken on an approximately 2 ft. x 3 ft. unfired horizontal submerged tube fluidized bed heat exchanger under simulated ship motions revealed the following new conclusions and verification of previous results: (a) The submerged tube to fluid heat transfer coefficient is improved as bed particle size is reduced. (b) In design of a full-scale shipboard fluidized bed, consideration must be given to the abrasive action of the bed under ship motions in material selection. (c) A statistically significant improvement in the tube to fluid heat transfer coefficient was observed for a fluidized bed under simulated ship motions versus a stationary fluidized bed for Reynolds numbers under 2.12. For calculation of this Reynolds number, the characteristic diameter was the particle diameter. (d) A fluidized bed with a single perforated plate baffle, located in the center near the bed surface, has a tube to fluid heat transfer coefficient approximately 28 percent better than a similar fluidized bed without a baffle.
