Managing Design and Development Downtown

These four articles highlight design and development techniques cities can use to improve the design quality of city building downtown or in neighborhoods. One article suggests that city officials control proposed development plans through incentive zoning, mandated design features, the establishment of special districts for review, enforcement of performance standards or prescriptive daylighting controls, and other techniques. Another article describes why the urban image is important and how to improve it: conducting a city analysis, considering urban design issues, and communicating to residents a strong city image are important steps in promoting a city. A third author explains how cities can develop and evaluate a marketing strategy to promote the city for economic development. An Urban Land Institute representative suggests ways city officials can identify problems in their community's permitting processing as a step in streamlining procedures and simplifying requirements; application and review processes, in particular, can be improved.
