The report provides design standards for hydraulic-driven synchronous generators. The determination of the power rating (kilowatts) and the number of generators in a powerplant is based on consideration of the quantity of water and the hydraulic head available for power generation as well as upon load and economic factors. The daily and annual load factors are important considerations in selecting the size of generators. The water wheel efficiency throughout its load range has an important bearing on the selection of unit size. Because the rated speed of a water wheel at any given head tends to decrease with increased capacity, the head may dictate smaller units than would otherwise be selected. With due consideration to the needs for reserve capacity and continuity of service, the size of generator selected should, on the basis of load duration curves, be such as to incur minimum overall annual investment and operating costs.
