Review of the Status of Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) with a Summary of Research and Management Needs

A workshop to determine and describe research needs and opportunities for gray whales relative to their protection and conservation and that of their habitat in the Eastern North Pacific was held in Monterey from 16-18 October 1985. The report summarizes the available information on the biology, distribution, and abundance of the California stock of gray whales. The techniques used to estimate absolute abundance, recent population trends, and carrying capacity are discussed. A research plan to identify, characterize, and protect habitats essential to the survival of gray whales; identify and avoid or mitigate the possible adverse effects of human activities on gray whales; monitor the status of the gray whale and habitats essential to its survival; and where possible, contrast social and reproductive behavior of gray whales with other cetacean species, is presented.
