The Hurricane Research Division (HRD) is NOAA's primary focus for research on hurricanes and tropical meteorology. HRD's research is directed at improved hurricane prediction through improved physical understanding of the structure and dynamics of these storms. Intensive studies of Hurricane Danny were carried out on August 14 and 15. Long-term monitoring aircraft patterns provided data to study the manner in which the hurricane's central core blends into its environment. Collected in Hurricane Elena, from August 28 through September 2, were exceptionally large quantities of valuable data for use in long-term monitoring (hurricane environmental interaction) and vortex evolution studies.
