Task-based rating schedules (TBRS) have recently become a popular personnel selection procedure, particularly for State civil service jobs. The TBRS is a self-report instrument in which applicants rate their experience on specific tasks. Meta-analytic evidence and theoretical considerations do not offer strong support for use of the type of applicant selection technique, but the empirical data base is small. Factors such as response verification, standardization of procedures, and better documentation are seen as critical in future TBRS research.
